Quickie Beer Review – Lagunitas Czech Style Pilsner

I did not take any tasting notes for this beer, though I made several mental notes about it. To start the Czech style pilsner was quite disappointing, especially when compared to the amazing pilsner available at Brewster’s Pub down the street. The use of Saaz hops is mentioned on their website, though it is obvious it is only used in bittering, as there is a complete lack of hop aroma or flavour in this pil. This in itself was a big let down, as I found that when used in flavouring it gave huge character to the pilsner. The rest of the beer drank very similar to a standard European lager, which I have reviewed a dozen times before.

I don’t usually compare beer to beer, as I try to be as impartial and open minded when tasting new brews, but its hard not to. The Czech pil at the Brewster was a revelation in brewing and the Lagunitas simply reminded me why before I rarely bought pilsner.

Final: 3/5 – Standard pilsner. Easy drinking, but nothing to write home about. To each their own though, I prefer my Pilsner’s heavily hopped in all flavour and aroma.
