Canada

Photographs from the country I live in.

Calgary - Nose Hill

Nose Hill is considered the largest inner-city park in all of North America. From about end of Spring until Winter its really just an ugly brown lump of dead grass in the city. During a brief period in Spring and most of the Winter it is quite an attractive place to go for a walk.

Alberta - Priddis

Priddis is just a short drive south of Calgary. Its a popular spot for hunters during the winter seasons, but it also makes for some nice landscape shots of the Rocky Mountains from its foothills.

Old Goat Glacier

Near the Spray Lakes, just outside of Canmore is a great the Old Goat Glacier Trial. The trial is challenging and a little difficult to locate, but rewarding from start to finish.

Valley of the Gargoyle

Cory Pass, the Valley of the Gargoyle and Edith pass the three parts of this hike located minutes away from Banff. It is considered the most difficult day hike in the Banff area, but it is also the most rewarding. Just over 20km from start to finish, with well over 1000m of elevation gain, this hike has rewarding scenery from top to bottom.

Raspberry Ridge

This hike is a short but sweet shoulder season, just an hour from Calgary's southern city limits. The first hour is a very mild incline, but the second hour becomes very aggressive. At the top is a helipad and a Fire Lookout tower.

Burstall Pass

An absolute gem of a hike. Located about 15 minutes from Spray Lakes, on Highway 40 (from Canmore, heading up past the Nordic Center), this easy to moderate difficulty hike is possibly my favorite in the Kananaskis. Its 15KM (5.5 hours round trip) top to bottom, with scenic views the entire way. The elevation gain is easy for most of the hike, but the terrain adds to the difficulty. The valley floods in the summer making it challenging to navigate your way around without getting wet. Mud and snow are plentiful past the valley so bring your gaitors!

Sunshine Meadows and Two Cairns Mountain

Don't let the bus ride to the start of the hike deter you from taking on Sunshine Meadows. If you take the path towards Healy Pass you can cut over to Two Cairns Mountain and even cross over into BC. The valley fills entirely with a varity of herbs and flowers for a few weeks every year, so you need to do this hike in August.
