Japanese – Several ways to say Home

Just like in English, Japanese has many different ways of saying “Home”. Each has different uses and levels of politeness. Lets take a look at a few:

うち - Home (specifically your house only)

いえ - House (can be used for your home or someone else)

おーたく - Residence (can only be used when talking about someone elses house)

~のところ - X’s Place (as in Brad’s Place or Yoshinori’s Place)*

* This can also be used when talking about a place in general, such as a beautiful place (きれいなところ)or busy place (いそがしいところ).
