A long time ago, back when I had just begun my adventure into beer tasting, I tried a beer called Maudite. At the time I was still young and uninitiated into the world of craft beer so Maudite was something of an unknown to my palette. A strong Belgian style beer, fermented in its own bottle and completely unfiltered, at the time I found it nearly revolting. It was the very first beer I ever poured down the sink. Almost 8 years later I find myself sitting here with a bottle of Maudite ready to try it once more. Could I have been too young and unprepared for this beer when I first sampled it? I have had nearly 650 beers since then so I would like to think my tastes have advanced with each bottle downed (and not just my liver deteriorating). I had to give it a second chance.

Name: Maudite
Origin: Quebec, Canada
Style: Belgian Strong Ale (8%)

Apperance: A dark copper coloured ale, a bit on the cloudy side, it pours with a soft, creamy head with good retention.

Taste: Wine, coriander and apples make up the aroma. A semi-sweet, fruity body, with notes of apples and fig. A sour lemon-zest also very apparent in the body. Piney and citrus hops become apparent towards the end, finishing with a lingering lemon-like citrus bitterness.

Mouth Feel: Sharp on the tongue and filling. Medium body. Chalky mouth feel towards the end of the drink.

Final Thoughts: 3.5/5 – If I could go back in time to slap my past self I would. Not only is this beer not as revolting as I once thought, its actually a really good Belgian ale. It does seem to lack that pizazz that most Belgian ales have, which prevents it from getting a 4 in my books. It almost makes me want to go back and retry all the low scoring beers in my list. Almost…
