Beer Review – Spillerner Dunkels

Name: Spillerner Dunkels

Origin: Vienna, Austria

Style: Dunkel (Marzen)

Appearance:  Brewed and bottled by the 1516 Brewing Co. in Vienna City, this is a thick, creamy headed marzen. The beer is a cloudy, browny-orange colour.

Taste: It odor was difficult to pin-point, though I think it at some bread-like qualities. The beer tastes of toasted oats and grains, maybe rye bread. It finishes bitter, with some fine hints of apples.

Mouth Feel:  The beer is very acidic, filling and has a long lasting, bitter-ashy finish.

Final Thoughts (2 out of 5):  This beer was difficult to read and I found the flavours did not blend well. There was well over 7 beers to try at this very famous brewpub and I seemed to have picked a lemon for myself. Too bad as I will probably never get another chance to sample a beer from 1516 Co. again.
