Beer Review – Raasted Imperial Stout

Name: Raasted Imperial Stout

Origin: Denmark

Style: Imperial Stout (9%)

Appearance: So think and black that light fails to penetrate this heavy stout. It pours with a fizzy, short lived head.

Taste: The aroma has notes of raisins and does not hide this beers very high ABV. The flavours range from sweet dark molasses to raisins, with rum-like notes and it finishes with a bitter, ash-like aftertaste. Just like with the aroma the high alcohol content of this stout is not masked at all, leaving a semi-alcoholic taste in the mouth.

Mouth Feel: This is a heavy bodied stout, with a foamy and soft mouth feel. Because of Raasted Imperial Ales very high, very noticeable ABV it gives this beer a hot mouth feel which lingers on the tongue.

Final Thoughts (3.5 out of 5): I generally shy away from beers with an ABV above 7%, but being in a rush completely mis-read the label. One bottle of this mighty stout will leave your head spinning.

Home Brew #2 – Pineapple Wine and bottle the MBT

I also took the time to create a new cider/fruit wine from Pineapple Juice concentrate.

Ingredients –

  • 12 cans of Pineapple Juice Concentrate
  • 500g Cane Sugar
  • WC-1118 Wine Yeast

Original gravity was 1.050, hoping for a 1.000 FG

—-
When I finished this quick home brew I bottled my Mead-Beer-Thing which will probably sit in bottles for the next 6-8 months before I even dare tasting it.

The Lager yeast fermented to 1.004, or 6% ABV.

The WC-1118 wine yeast fermented out to nearly 0.990, or 7.5% ABV.

Home Brew – Pumpkin Pie Stout

Halloween is my FAVORITE holiday and I wanted to make a pumpkin ale but I wanted to make a stout. Thats a lot of work to do so instead I just combined them into an wickedly spooky combination: A pumpkin pie stout.

Ingredients -

  • 3.75lbs LME Pilsner Extract
  • 500g of DME
  • 1/2lbs of Chocolate Malt (steeped for 30 minutes)
  • 40 oz of Canned Pumpkin Puree
  • 1/2 tsp of Pumpkin Pie Spice (Ginger, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, All Spice mix)
  • 1 tsp yeast nutrient
  • 1 packet Nottingham Dry Yeast (11g)

Boiled all ingredients for 45 minutes. Cooled rapidly and yeast pitched

Original gravity was 1.035. This will need a secondary and maybe even a tertiary fermentation remove all the trub that the pumpkin puree is going to leave behind.

Hiking – Raspberry Ridge

I really wish I got out hiking every weekend. Calgarian’s are blessed with some of the most amazing hiking trails in all of Canada, if not the world. Raspberry Ridge is another gem, snuggled away 100km South West of the city, somewhere at the entrance of the Rockie Mountains.

The first hour of the hike is quite easy, but the second hour is a where all the elevation gain is making it challenging.

You can check out some of the other pictures in the Canada Photography gallery.

Beer Review – Biard Beer’s Rising Sun Ale

Name: Biard Beer’s Rising Sun Ale

Origin: Japan

Style: IPA (5%)

Appearance: A foggy, caramel coloured ale, it poured with a nice medium head with good retention.

Taste: Its aroma is floral, with notes of raspberries. The initial flavour is quite tart and grassy, with only small hints of berries coming through. These lead into a sweeter raspberry-esque finish.

Mouth Feel: The Rising Sun Ale is light bodied, filling and soft. Due to the heavy bitterness it leaves that all-to-familiar chalky feeling in the mouth.
