Beer Review – Old Engine Oil

Name: Harviestoun’s Old Engine Oil

Origin: Scotland

Style: Porter (6%)

Appearance: An intensely black porter, so much that even when held in direct light you still can not see through it. It pours with a medium head that is creamy and thick in appearance.

Taste: The aromas are strong and sweet, mostly of raisins, berries and just the subtlest hint of chocolate. The flavour is only briefly sweet though, with flavours similar to its aroma. Raisin and molasses are noted, but give way quickly to bitter chocolates and pine. It has some earthy notes as well, that exist in the background of the entire session. It finishes with a very bitter pine-like aftertaste that lasts for several minutes after finishing.

Mouth Feel: A heavy bodied porter, with a soft, creamy mouth feel. Not particularly filling and not very refreshing due to the intensely bitter nature of this porter.

Final Thoughts (3 out of 5): It’s not a bad tasting porter, but it is not as rich or sweet as I would have liked. Outside of the heavy bitterness Old Engine Oil is rather light tasting.
