Beer Review – Maredsous De Abbaye 8 Brune

Name: Maredsous De Abbaye 8 Brune

Origin: Belgium

Style: Abbey Ale, Dubbel (8%)

Appearance: A dark copper coloured ale that pours with a large foamy head. It has excellent head retention.

Taste: It has strong aromas of raisins and just a subtle hint of molasses. A very flavorful, sweet tasting abbey ale. I can find flavours of raisins, berries and molasses. It has some bitterness which reminds me of grapefruits. Finishes with a slightly sweet, dark brown sugar like aftertaste.

Mouth Feel: It has a nice soft mouth feel, but has a heavy body to it. There is some note of heat from the high ABV.

Final Thoughts (4 out of 5): I generally stay away from high ABV beers, but its hard to do so when picking up Abbey ales. You would think monks would brew with some sense of restraint, but what do I know.
