Name: Eggenberg Urbock 23
Origin: Salzburg, Austria
Style: Urbock (Bock, Strong Beer, 9.6%)
Appearance: This was strongest beer I tried while over in Austria. The beer was a clear orange colour and poured with little head.
Taste: The odour of this Urbock was strong and reminded me, strangely enough, of soy sauce. The beer tasted of a variety of saltly, sweet and malty tastes. There are some notes of caramel and something else sugar I could not define. The salty and malty taste meshed well with the beer overall. In the finishing moments of the beer, the high alcohol content came through leaving a somewhat unpleasant aftertaste.
Mouth Feel: Low carbonation and a soft mouth feel overall, which was surprising for such a strong beer. The aftertaste lingered a long time.
Final Thoughts (3 out of 5): This beer is a heavy hitter sitting at nearly 10% ABV. It is strong, rich tasting beer with a unique variety of flavours.
