Name: Blanche de Chambley
Origin: Quebec, Canada
Style: White Ale (5%)
Appearance: It pours with a large, foamy-soft head. It is a cloudy, pale yellow coloured ale. Obvious signs of yeast sediment at the bottom of the bottle.
Taste: The smell is metallic and sour. Some notes of hay in the aroma. The flavor is very sour, with flavors ranging from green apples and lemons. Definite winey notes tasted as well. Finishes relatively clean, though it does remind me of eating a lemon.
Mouth Feel: Sharp and carbonated, but not filling. Light bodied.
Final Thoughts (2.5 out of 5): I generally dislike sour beers but this one is not too bad. Unibrowes claim to fame is the fact it does additional fermentation in the bottle which is called ‘on lees’. I am going to try to harvest this yeast for my own brewing.
Fun fact: Unibrowe was bought out by Sleemans Brewery, another major Canadian brewer. Funner Fact: Sleeman’s was bought out by Sapporo in 2005 make Unibrowe Japanese!
