Routine of the Day – HSPU, KB Swings, Box Jumps
Posted by bradinator in Misc on September 30, 2010
Warm Up – 3 Rounds for time
- 10 Pullups
- 20 Situps
- 30 Pushups
- 40 Squats
Routine of the Day – Complete as many rounds for Time
- 10 Handstand Pushups
- 10 Kettlebell Swings (1 pood)
- 10 Box Jumps (20″)
Managed to get 12 rounds, just as the time expired.
This is actually a scaled-down variation of the Crossfit created “Jack” routine. I do not have a 115lbs Barbell for Push Press so I subbed Handstand Pushups instead. I make use of the equipment I have available.
Beer Review – Innis and Gunn Rum Cask
Posted by bradinator in Beer, Beer Tasting, Photography on September 29, 2010
Name: Innis and Gunn Rum Cask
Origin: Scotland
Style: Scotish Ale (7.4%)
Appearance: A light copper coloured red ale that is also quite clear. There is not much of a head created from the pour and it has no retention.
Taste: The aroma is overwhelming fruity, with definite notes of apples and caramel. There is some wood like aromas as well. The flavour is sweet with strong notes of raisins and milder notes of toffee and apples. There is a subtle woody oak nestled into the background of this beer. This ale finishes with a sweet raisin-like flavours and a lingering, yet pleasant, oak taste on the tongue.
Mouth Feel: It is a moderately carbonated, medium body and moderately sharp beer.
Final Thoughts (5 out of 5): I have not given a five in a long time, but Innis and Gunn Rum Cask is close enough that I think it deserves it. This ale is an absolute treat for the palette!

Home Brew – Hard Lemonade update
Posted by bradinator in Experiments, Home Brewing, Photography on September 29, 2010
My hard lemonade has been fermenting for quite some time now and according to the recipe it is well past its required time for bottling. I decided to siphon off a glass, straight from the fermenter (of course I sanitized the wine-thief with Starsan prior) for sampling.
I took a gravity reading, which was 0.996 (a massive improvement from the 1.040 it was stuck at for nearly 2 weeks), placing it at around 5.7% ABV and 160kcal a pint.
The flavour is dry and sour, leaving it mildly unpalatable at this stage. I am not overly worried as it is very easy to back-sweeten an overly dry cider. Some examples would be an ounce of 7-up or pineapple juice added to each glass to brighten the overall flavour.
I will probably bottle it this weekend, though its obvious that there is still much life left in the yeast as fermentation bubbles are still present.
Beer Review – Red Rose Amber Ale
Posted by bradinator in Beer, Beer Tasting, Photography on September 28, 2010
Name: Red Rose Amber Ale
Origin: Shizuoka, Japan
Style: Ale (5.5%)
Appearance: A dark, foggy and unclear ale. Its caramel coloured, with some obvious floaties which shows this beer is unfiltered. It pours with a medium head and has excellent retention.
Taste: The aroma is very hoppy, with some obvious rose-like scents. The taste is malty and bready, with strong notes from the hops giving it a very floral flavour. There is definitely rose petals used in this ale, giving it a uniquely floral flavour. Despite the heavy hoppiness of the beer its surprisingly not bitter at all. The aftertaste is floral, malty and very long lasting.
Mouth Feel: It has a soft mouthfeel, medium body and is not filling at all.
Final Thoughts (4.0 out of 5): I love hops. I love ales. I love hoppy ales. The addition of rose to this brew gives it a unique and enjoyable palette.
