Routine of the Day – SHDL, Pullups, Ring Dips

Warm Up - 3 Rounds for Time of:

  • 10 Pullups
  • 30 Pushups
  • 30 Situps
  • 30 Squats

Finished in 3:09, a new personal best.

Routine of the Day - 5 Rounds for Time of:

  • 21 Sumo Highpull Deadlifts @ 60lbs
  • 21 Pullups
  • 21 Ring Dips

Finished in 15:34 with the 14lbs training vest. I seriously underestimated this routine. Each round only seemed to compound in difficulty. I blazed through the first in under 1:30, then 2:00 for the second, but after that it was downhill from there; Unbroken sets became impossible for all exercises killing my overall time. Needless to say this one really kicked my butt.

Cash Out – Tabata Intervals

Bootstrappers – 32, 23, 20, 20, 17, 19, 18, 18 – Total 167, Best 17

Oh god fire! My quads felt as if they burst into flames after the first round. Such a simple movement to perform, but an incredibly intense leg workout. I knew after the first round I was in for a world of burning pain for the next 3 minutes and 30 seconds. When finished standing up was difficult.

Beer + Time = Better Beer

This is hardly a revelation for any homebrewer; Time makes beer better. More time in the primary, more time in the secondary, more time in the bottles; It really makes a difference in the final product. Patience is of the utmost importance when creating beer.

For what it’s worth I have always known this as truth, but rarely ever practiced extended bottle conditioning. I would compare it to Christmas mornings of my youth where I would wake up as early as possible to open my gifts, even before the rest of my family. It was nice getting my gifts early, but I missed out on opening presents with the rest of the family later in the day.

It seems opening my beers early has a similar outcome. As for extended bottle conditioning of my beers, the longest I have done was one month for my Indian Pale Ale I created last summer. That said I placed aside a single pint which I finally cracked open last night and I have to say I regret not doing this for the entire batch.

The difference in flavours from then and now are like night and day, reminding me of Whistlers Classic Pale Ale, a beer a enjoyed thoroughly. All the bland, uninspiring flavours from my IPA have really evolved into something worthy of initial effort invested in its creation. Even the appearance of the beer had noticeably improved, showing greater clarity and colour to the point I almost second guessed it as my own.

I had also set aside one of my molasses porters several months ago. Back then I found it to have somewhat overwhelming molasses flavours, though it was still enjoyable. Tonight I plan to crack it open and take some tasting notes on it. If time worked its magic on this brew I am sure I will be in for a treat.

An Experiment in Brewology – Part 4

Thought I forgot about this didn’t you? I wanted to give these a very long time to settle before trying them again.

I did not take gravity readings this time, though in hindsight I probably should have. I did take some tasting notes from each glass though.

Bread Yeast – Some of the funny off-flavours have dissipated from this cider. It smells like cheap wine and has a semi-sour, sweet taste. It seems to have retained its apple juice like qualities, including being completely flat.

Beer Yeast – Bleh. This one has taken a turn for the worst. That funny off-taste of yeast is stronger then ever in this cider. The yeast obviously did not do a very good job of cleaning up the flavours before they died.  It is definitely the sweetest of the bunch, but has over the past 6 months become flat like the bread yeast.

WC-1118 – It smells like wine, it looks like wine and for all intensive purposes it tastes like wine. The driest of the bunch and the most carbonated, the WC-1118 yeast did an exceptional job of cleaning up any form of funky flavours. It was the cleanest, most enjoyable of the batch. It was so enjoyable I finished off the entire bottle of it with happy results.

I still have one more round which I will do way into the summer. Thumbs plus for SCIENCE!

Round 4 is finished with WC-1118 in the lead!
