Beer Review – Westmalle Abbey Trappist Dubbel

Name: Westmalle Abbey Trappist Dubbel

Origin: Belgium

Style: Dubbel (Trappist 7.0%)

Appearance: The beer is a light brown, iced tea colour. It pours with a powerful, large foamy head that can fill your glass entirely if your not careful. Thankfully this monster head dissipates rather quick, leaving only memories of its former glory.

Taste: This is a very bitter beer. There are some minor notes of citrus and caramel, but these are washed out by the bitterness. The ABV is also present in the aftertaste, leaving a small taste of alcohol on your tongue.

Mouth Feel: Despite its high ABV, this Trappist beer is quite the easy drinker. Soft on the tongue and quite filling.

Final Thoughts (3.0 out of 5): Just like wheat ales, I found my tastebuds have begun taking a liking to the Trappist and Abbey ales. I found this beer to quite bitter, despite its recorded IBU only being around 40. Over all this isn’t a bad choice for those looking to sample their first Holy Ale.
