Tasting Notes on the Saaz and Christmas Ale

So I think I have been enjoying these often enough since bottling that its ready to start giving some tasting notes on these two brews I bottled about a month ago.

Spiced Christmas Ale – 3.5/5

The first is the Spiced Christmas Ale which is my first attempt at a specialty beer. Using spices in any brew can be very risky because too much can very easily ruin it. Luckily for me the amount of spice used for this batch size was perfect, for my tastes anyway. Sweet, spicy and very soft, this beer may have the best head retention of any of my creations. Their is just a subtle taste of honey in the background, plus the obvious addition of the Christmas spices. I am very please with the results.

Saaz Pilsner – 3.0/5

The second was my Saaz Pilsner, which I was hoping would mimic the incredible Czech Pilsner available at Brewsters. For obvious reasons (such as my lack of equipment, patience, money, time and experience), I can honestly admit this did not turn out into the clone I was hoping for. That being said it is still a nice drinking beer, with a definite Saaz hop flavour. I did find it a little sweeter then I wanted, so I think next time I will probably double the amount of Saaz hops used.
