Beer Review – La Vache Folle Imperial Milk Stout

Name: La Vache Folle Imperial Milk Stout

Origin: Quebec, Canada

Style: Imperial Stout (Milk Stout – 9%)

Appearance: This beer pours as black as night and a thick as any beer I have ever seen. It produces a thick, foamy head that reminded me of what a root beer float looks like. The monster of a head produced lasted for a very long time.

Taste: This stout produces odors as powerful as its appearance. The aroma does little to hide its high alcohol content, some spicy odors as well.  This is a very sweet stout, with strong notes of dark chocolate and some of molasses. It finishes with a semi-sour, with some noticeable alcoholic flavours. It reminded me a little of Baily’s. Long lasting sweet aftertaste.

Mouth Feel:  Not overly fizzy or sharp, but very soft with good body. For such a strong beer it goes down very smooth.

Final Thoughts (3.5 out of 5):  Milk Stouts get there name from the use of Lactose sugars, which are unfermentable. These give the beer much more body and a sweeter, heavier flavour. La Vache Folle’s Imperial Milk Stout is like a blacker, sweeter, roid-rage powerful version of Guinness.
